Greenvillians said: They want more pickles. That was a consensus among residents who petitioned Greenville city officials for the A Day Without Pickleball Wouldn’t Kill Me But Why Risk It limited Shirt construction of additional handball fields at the recent City Council meeting in February.

One resident, John Moore, said handball is the fastest growing sport in America, “and it must also be the fastest growing sport in Greenville”. According to Moore, in 2017, there were 275 players in Upstate’s rugby database. Today there are about 1,000 players. Pickleball is a combination of tennis, ping pong, and badminton. Players use special paddles and swirl balls, and the games take place on a badminton net the size of a slightly modified tennis net. The most popular games are doubles, although singles are also an option.
“Handball is one of the A Day Without Pickleball Wouldn’t Kill Me But Why Risk It limited Shirt easy sports to learn but hard to master, made for the whole family to play with,” Moore said. Two years ago, the city of Greenville renovated two tennis courts at Timmons Park into six dedicated handball courts. They are currently the only dedicated venues to play handball in the city. “Drive through Timmons Park in the morning or evening, and you’ll see all six in use with dozens – yes, dozens – of sideline players waiting to play,” Moore said.
Greenville is behind the curve when it comes to sour balls, Moore added. Pope Stadium at Easley has eight dedicated melon football fields; So is the Anderson Sports Complex. Mauldin’s new city center plans call for six indoor handball courts and two outdoor handball courts. Moore and other residents have asked Council members to consider converting at least two tennis courts in need of renovation at Gower Park off Laurens Street into a handball court to meet the A Day Without Pickleball Wouldn’t Kill Me But Why Risk It limited Shirt growing to demand.
The tennis courts in Holmes, Cleveland, and McPherson Parks could also be turned into baseball fields, Moore said. Ann O’Brien, a Greenville water ballplayer, and Realtor said she could even see the advantage of having a handball complex where the city could host regional tournaments. (This year’s Greenville County Handball Tournament in April will be held on 12 makeshift courts in Northside Park.) “It will help our economy with hotels and restaurants,” O ‘ Brien said.
Greenville City Director John McDonough, a personal rugby athlete, is a major proponent of the sport’s expansion in the city. City Councilman Russell Stall even has a melon football field on his driveway. “We will look for more opportunities in Greenville and we will resubmit the proposals to the Council,” said McDonough.
