The poster – one of which features images of people from a variety of professions – has been heavily criticized on social media, with renowned choreographer Sir Matthew Bourne tweeting: “This must be a joke? Isn’t it?”
Number 10 said the ad was part of a long-term campaign but admitted that its moment was “unacceptable.”
The prime minister’s official spokesman said: “This is part of a campaign to encourage people from all walks of life to think about their careers in cybersecurity.
“But this particular section of content is inappropriate and has been removed from the campaign.
“The government recognizes the challenge facing the cultural industry and today the culture secretary announced a £257m grant to help support 1,385 theatres, art locations, museums, and cultural institutions across England.”
