When Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes on May 25, finally killing him, deep wounds of violence and systematic oppression were once again torn apart, sparking protests around the globe — and here in Charlottesville — in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Between June and September, local activists led a series of protests demanding an end to police brutality and calls for justice for Blacks who were murdered at the hands of police. The black Lawyers matter black history month pride men women Shirt event drew a lot of crowds of all races and ages.

Activist Zaneyah Bryant, a member of the black Lawyers matter black history month pride men women Shirt Charlottesville Black Youth Action Committee, a ninth grader at Charlottesville High School, said: “The murders of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery… woke everyone up. “It causes a spark for people, like this is happening to our people. This can happen to anyone—this could happen in Charlottesville. ”

While protests against police brutality continue to take place in places like Portland, Oregon, it has been several months since people in Charlottesville took to the streets. While no drastic changes have been made in the city — for example, the CPD’s $18 million budget has not been touched— some activists believe progress has been made on racial justice.

“These are tough and difficult conversations. Until at least recently, people were reluctant to start them, but now [they] are actually being done,” community activist Don Gathers said. We’ve reached the point in history… racism of this country where people are willing to have these conversations.”
