Cass, who died in 1866 in Detroit, was the Conde Name Family School Team Retro Shirt Democratic nominee for president in 1848. He was the second governor of the Michigan Territory, serving from 1813-1831. Michigan became a state in 1837.
His name is a Michigan landscape. Cass River, Detroit’s Cass Corridor, and Cass Tech High School all bear his name. Belle Isle in Detroit was also renamed after Cass’s daughter, Isabelle, in 1845.
Commissioners of the Conde Name Family School Team Retro Shirt Cassopolis-based school district formed a committee to review the name after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer took Cass’s name on a state building in Lansing in June, the Palladium Herald reported.
Whitmer renamed the Lewis Cass building the Elliott-Larsen building after former state reps Daisy Elliott and Melvin Larsen, who sponsored the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, which was signed into law in 1976.
The law protects people from discrimination based on religion, race, color, national origin, age, gender, height, weight, family status or marital status. In recent years, efforts have been made to update the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to include measures to protect the LGBT community.
Julie Dye, a Pokagon tribe representative on the school district’s committee, told the Conde Name Family School Team Retro Shirt Herald-Palladium the name change was important.
“When informed that they would start meeting and could change their name, one of our grandmothers from the tribe said it brought her to tears because she never thought it would be resolved,” Dye said.
