David Norman of Cambridge University, UK, spent three years completing what Richard Owen – who invented the word “dinosaur” – began briefly in the 1850s
. Scelidosaurus skeleton found in the 193 million-year-old fossil rocks on the western Jurassic Coast of Dorset and sent to Owen at the British Museum.
He had published two short papers on its anatomy, but many details were not recorded and Norman suggested in an earlier article that his work “was said to be strangely narrow-minded. and a bit messy ”.
Norman has now completed a study of all known matter associated with Scelidosaurus and reports that this reveals many of the first.
“Nobody knows that the skull has horns on the back edge,” he said. “It has some bones that have never been recognized in any other dinosaur species. It is also clear from the rough texture of the skull that in life it is covered with hard horns, a bit like scales on the surface of the skulls of living turtles.
“In fact, its entire body is protected by an array of spikes and rivet-like bones.”
Now that its anatomy is understood, it is possible to examine the position of Scelidosaurus in the dinosaur tree, Norman said.
