Did you miss the Poughkeepsie Magazine story about Det’s 10th anniversary? The death of John Falcone? Here’s a condensed version to get you started. For Victoria Fiorisi, the Falcone limited Shirt night before her first day of school is one of those reminders. That was when her brother, Det. John Falcone will test his middle school teacher and school-age grandson each year.

There are reminders everywhere for those who know the 18-year veteran of the Poughkeepsie Municipal Police Department. There are roads and a stretch of highway dedicated to Falcone. There are blood holes held in his honor and triathlon in his name. And there are monuments around the city that he protected, including the Falcone limited Shirt Poughkeepsie Train Station, where he devoted his life.
On February 18, 2011, Falcone was shot dead while confronting a man with fellow officers. The man, Lee Welch, had killed his wife a few minutes earlier, and soon after shot himself. Falcone’s death is history; he became the first city officer to die while on duty since 1969 and the first to die from a gun. Falcone is a dedicated and decorated officer. But 10 years later, people who come into contact with him often talk about his gentle demeanor and acts of kindness.
But, for the Falcone limited Shirt officers who have served with him, 10 years of history is still fresh. Not only did it simply keep Falcone’s memories alive, but the ministry also taught a class to all of its officers about his sacrifice, how the events of that day played out, and the dangers of work. Falcone and other officers are unaware they are reacting to a domestic dispute, a situation law enforcement officials say is one of the most volatile and unpredictable situations they face. Poughkeepsie police officials say those police officers’ approach that Friday afternoon did not change.
