An Orlando immigration attorney supports U.S. Sen. Rick Scott’s decision to block U.S. Senator Rick Scott’s bill in Florida, which would remove a limit on the number of highly skilled immigrants that can get green cards from any which country.
“It doesn’t work in Florida. It doesn’t work for anyone, ”said lawyer Carlos Colombo.
Every year in the United States, approximately 140,000 US legal residency cards based on employment, or green cards, are issued to immigrants.
Currently, the limit prevents any country from getting more than 7% of that total.
This restriction has created a backlog of about a million people belonging to three of the five employment-based green cards.
Citizens from India and China, two of the most populous in the world, can wait up to 17 years before they receive a green card.
Proponents of the bill, who recently opposed Scott’s move to block S. 386, or the 2019 Skilled Immigrants Fairness Act, said it would open up a new opportunity by remove that limit.
Colombo, however, says that was not necessarily a victory for Florida.
“It alleviates some of the backlog for Indian and Chinese citizens, but it won’t solve the serious backlog,” he said.
That also means less space for skilled Latin American and European immigrants, he said.
“It will be many years before they can actually go to the US, to Florida, where they have had a huge positive impact on our economy,” said Colombo. “In order to attract individuals from different nationalities and in different fields, we should have a bill to increase the number. We’ve also cut the number of H-1B Visas over the years and we’ve seen the negative effects of doing so. ”
Many of them work in industries critical to Sunshine State’s economy, such as tourism, hotels, healthcare, and even the space industry,” he said.
“Don’t, as immigrants or immigrants themselves, don’t support something that could hurt other immigrants,” Colombo said.
Scott, the former Florida governor, said in a statement to Spectrum News 13 that he was concerned about the impact on Latin American immigrants and the impact it could have on American workers.
