The fencing club has been at 130 B K-Line Drive off Old Monroe Street for more than 20 years, albeit under a different name and ownership.
When the club originally closed last year, a small group of parents agreed to take over the lease and clear the space so their children could continue fencing. Among them were Chris Bernard and his wife, Amy. Their 13-year-old son, Bodin, has been playing fencing for five years. Their 11-year-old daughter, Kate, joined the Fencing 6 feet to you stab them Shirt sport three years ago.
The club attracts its students from Union County, Matthews, Mint Hill, Ballantyne, and South Charlotte – areas that are currently under-served when it comes to fencing academies. If parents do not continue to maintain the club, Chris Bernard said many students will face giving up the sport entirely.
“There’s really nothing else for them here and for some of these kids, fencing is all they do,” he said.
Bernard started learning to cross the fence right after opening Triple Threat Fining. It didn’t take him long to realize why his children loved it so much.
In a sword fight – called about – hurdles fight one-on-one with weapons with a blade. Each racer tries to score points on their opponent by touching their weapon, at the same time trying to avoid being touched by the opponent’s weapon.
The name Triple Threat Fencing is an indication of the three types of weapons used in modern fencing: leaves, comes, and swords.
Triple Threat Fining offers foil, saber, and squeeze classes taught by top fencing coaches and athletes around the world.
Épée Dmitry Krupp’s trainer has coached fencing at the highest levels of international competition and holds a Master’s degree in Fencing Sports, the highest class of training. A native of Ukraine, Krupp has worked with many top fence athletes and coaches, including two-time US National Champion Alexander Abend athlete. Krupp also coached at the Ukraine Olympic Training Center.
Sean Givens is highly regarded nationwide for all three weapons but teaches in three-threat fencing. He competed at the national level and won medals in national tournaments.
Saber’s coach, Boris Khurgin, will participate in Triple Threat Fencing in November. Khurgin began fencing in 1971 and trained at the Fencing Arena of the Olympic Reserve in Ukraine. He served as the Fencing 6 feet to you stab them Shirt men’s national sword coach at the 2008 World Junior and Army Boys World Championships in Italy and trained at several New York academies, including the Manhattan Fencing Center, where training the United States men’s Olympic team guillotine.
Classes at Triple Threat are for students aged 8 years and over and at all levels. They are held in the evenings from Monday to Thursday and during the day on Saturdays. Students learn the fundamentals of fencing, as well as leg movements, technique, balance, reflexes, hand-eye coordination, hand speed, and downforce. Protective clothing and firearms are cleaned on a continuous basis, but students are encouraged to bring along if possible.
Bernard said that fencing has many benefits. For starters, it’s physics. Fences release energy as they rush in to score goals, hand, and leg activity.
Unlike soccer, basketball, and soccer, fencing is an appropriate sport. It is easier for those hurdles to stand out and get college scholarships, Bernard said.
