Archaeologist Astrid Kviseth lifted the sword from the 1,000-year-old tomb and placed it in a pre-prepared cushioning box. She is unclear exactly how much the sword weighs, but remarks the user must be extremely strong to be able to swing it up.
For the Vikings, swords are named and extremely sacred family items that fathers leave to their sons from generation to generation. Swords are also symbols of the status of elite warriors. Because swords are difficult to forge, they are expensive and rare.
In early Middle Ages Viking tombs, swords were usually placed to the GOD JUL VIKING TOMTE Shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater right of the remains, according to Dr. Raymond Sauvage, the archaeologist at the NTNU University Museum. Most people are right-handed so warriors often wear swords on the left to easily draw. However, most of the swords in the tomb are placed on the right because the Vikings believe that the afterlife is a reflection of the real world.
In the warrior’s tomb in Vinjeora, the sword lies to the left of the remains. Therefore, Sauvage suggests that this person may be left-handed. This makes the tomb a very rare and special discovery.
The sword is covered in thick rust. Archaeologists hope that, after X-ray and analysis, the GOD JUL VIKING TOMTE Shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater decorations or marks on the blade will be exposed.
