Unfortunately, I was unable to identify the “ugly brown” squirrel as described and so I turned to our readers their thoughts. In response we receive the following:

From Brookfield: “I am an old lady and have lived for a long time near the edge of the woods. From what this reader describes, I think she might have a weasel family name. If she observes weasels, she will see that they are reddish-brown, do not bushy tails, have a blinking behavior, are very playful, are highly intelligent and will scare away squirrels. I suggest that before she does anything about the problem, she contacted the I’m A Squirrel In A Human Costume Novelty Shirt state to find out if they were protected species. For our readers’ information, when I checked with the Fish & Games Division, I found that weasels can be picked up in Coos County from 20 October to 31 December. March 1 to March 31 at Coos; in Carroll County, October 20 through March 20; and in Grafton County, October 20 to April 10. In the remaining counties, weasels can be obtained from November 1 to April 10.
