Ms. Kamala Harris was chosen by Joe Biden as a candidate for the US vice president position. And Mr. Biden has just been officially nominated as the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party.
People in the village of Painganadu – the ancestral village of Harris in Tamil Nadu state, southern India – have built up boards with pictures of Ms. Harris. Harris-san’s mother – who moved to America to study – has found her roots in this village.
“Mrs. Kamala Harris has come as far as running for vice president in the US. And of course, the villagers are very happy,” said Ramanan, who looks after a local temple.

Ramanan said Mr. P.V. Gopalan (deceased) – Harris’s maternal grandfather and a former senior official in the Indian Government – once raised money to support the temple when he visited.
Ms. Harris was born in Oakland, California, to a Jamaican father and an Indian mother. Both her father and mother were immigrants to the United States.
After her parents divorced, she was mostly raised by a Hindu mother. Her mother is a cancer researcher and civil rights activist.
Ms. Harris shared that her mother adopted the culture of the people of color in Oakland and raised her two daughters based on that culture.
During her annual trips to India as a child, Harris used to go for walks with his grandfather and his friends. In a speech back in 2018, Sen. Harris recalled such trips in India.
