“There will be a hole in our family’s hearts forever, but heaven has had a magical woman.”
Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area with my only sister, Jane, who has Down syndrome. We are only 14 months apart. She was born prematurely, her weight dropped after giving birth to less than 4 pounds. Doctors brought her home to die: that’s what they did with kids like her in the 1960s. But she defied and even thrived.
As she grew up, my sister – unable to contain her oversized tongue – turned her eyes to the Kids Bmxer Little Sister – Bmx Bike Girls Tee shirt side and stiffened with embarrassment. I’ve seen her annoyance too many times to stay off guard, play defensively all my life. I inherited few options but on the side of the disadvantaged.
Our town is almost completely lacking in diversity, and people with disabilities are closed down and rarely seen. Many people stared and pointed at her. Others giggle or laugh. Some even threw the Kids Bmxer Little Sister – Bmx Bike Girls Tee shirt word “R”. Breathing hard or loudly, that’s one reason my sister can believe in her gentle and lovely nature. She growled under her breath, “Not a retard. Not a retard. Slow, no! ”
Although Jane can barely speak the Kids Bmxer Little Sister – Bmx Bike Girls Tee shirt language, she is multilingual. She knows from almost every song. She just joins and creates them when she comes along.
As a child, our main connection is through music – joy expressed through dance, sadness, and a longing for melody. Jane taught me a different kind of listening. Not too much with your ears, but mentally, with your whole being.
