December 12 is a big day in Mexican culture. It was a day back in the 16th century when chronicles of that period said the Virgin of Guadalupe, a Catholic title for the Virgin Mary, appeared in Mexico. Since then every year, major celebrations have taken place in her honor across Mexico and in the United States, Edgar Villanueva, father of St. Peters Canisius said they are having to be creative to continue the Lady & Her Hat hot Shirt tradition.
Father Villanueva said last year more than 6,000 people came to St. Peters Canisius to celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe, but this year they held outdoor events, asked every family to stay in their cars, and tuned in to the radio to listen to the mass. Elio Corral, an event participant, said it was all about trying to keep people safe during this difficult time.
This celebration usually includes a large amount of food, drinks, and activities for everyone, but this year due to the rapid spread of COVID-19, none of them are feasible. Father Villanueva said above all this event offers something very special. Villanueva said: “People are finding our Lady of Guadalupe again as a symbol of hope for all of us living in this hopeless situation. Future events may never be the Lady & Her Hat hot Shirt same as the outcome of this crisis, but like many events at this celebration, we must also find hope to help us get through the war with COVID-19.
The annual pilgrimage that attracted millions to the Basilides of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City was canceled this year, and many churches that celebrated Our Lady of Guadalupe have restricted attendance. Pope Julio Martinez placed a portrait of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the back of a pickup truck and celebrated the festival on Saturday in the church members’ front yard.
