A stone Buddha head was stolen from one of the statues in the Let that Shit Go Buddha limited Shirt Tian Longshan Cave, north of China nearly a century ago was recovered, the National Cultural Heritage Administration (NCHA) said on Thursday. Buddha’s head brought back from Japan on December 12, is the 100th relic to be recovered by China from abroad in 2020, according to NCHA.

NCHA first identified Buddha heads in September 2020 when the sculpture reappeared at a Japanese auction house. The house canceled the auction after the NCHA contacted it and requested that the auction be suspended. Thien Long Son Cave, in Thai Nguyen City, Shanxi Province, is famous for its Buddha statues. Construction of the caves began in the Eastern Wei period (534-550) and continued until the Tang Dynasty (618-907). There are 25 caves and more than 500 Buddha statues in Thien Long Son Cave. With many sculptures missing or scattered abroad, researchers have worked for years to recreate the original splendor of the caves through digital images.
Tests and assessments conducted by experts after the Buddha’s arrival in Beijing found the relic was stolen from a statue in Cave 8 of the caves circa 1924. on display to the audience on Thursday at the Chinese state-run Chinese Spring Festival gala and will be on display at the Beijing Luxun Museum from February 12 to March 14. It will be sent back to Thai Nguyen and stored in the Let that Shit Go Buddha limited Shirt Thien Long Son Cave museum, according to NCHA.
