Tomorrow, Sunday Bible-sharing churches will hear Matthew’s gospel report on how Jesus responded to a pagan woman seeking to heal her daughter. (Matthew 15: 21-28) When the story began, Jesus “retreated to the counties of Tire and Simon.” Tire and Sidon are located outside Palestine, the Jewish homeland; they are the territory of the Gentiles.

A woman from the area approached Jesus and asked for healing for her daughter, who was possessed by a demon. Jesus responded with a coldness that was far beyond annoyance when she stepped in when he withdrew. Jesus answered, “I am only sent to the lost sheep of Israel …” The woman is not “one of us.”

In what one scholar describes as “one of the most moving of all gospels,” the woman knelt before Jesus and prayed: “Lord, help me. “. Again Jesus refused: ‘It is not right to throw a children’s bread and throw it to the dog. ‘ (vs. 26)

God’s love goes beyond national boundaries or racial or ethnic differences. God is in fact in history because He is eternal.

But God overcame the barrier of time and entered history through the covenant to be known by all. While a covenant began with creation, it had a concrete manifestation through Israel and was fulfilled in Jesus Christ. God’s love for all nations and peoples was communicated first through Israel and finally through his Son.

The first reading for Sunday liturgy comes from Isaiah. In this passage we hear the announcement that the Lord’s salvation will be revealed so that we are called to be just and act righteous. Israel’s prophet, speaking for the Lord, goes on to say that the foreigners will share that salvation with all those who act righteous, obey their own ways, and the covenant , there will be a place in my home.

He said: “I will bring them to my holy mountain and rejoice in my prayer house; Their burnt offerings and offerings will be accepted on my altar, for my home will be called the house of prayer for all peoples. ”
