During COVID-19’s often dark, disoriented days, Angela Jones finds a sparkle of hope in her plastic Christmas tree bought by Costco. As the CEO of Washington STEM, a nonprofit that promotes science and engineering education and careers through advocacy and coalition building, Jones is at the Merry Christmas Y’all 2020 New Shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater center of many issues. challenging and often emotional today. That includes racial and sexual inequality, scientific skepticism and underestimation, and widespread divisions that can make it difficult for different partners to sit at the table and work well with together.
Her Seattle-based organization works like a consulting group that meets a sponsor-creator meeting a collaborative facilitator. Its programs work to support the development of math skills in early education; promote STEM in K-12 education; and promote STEM career pathways, especially for girls and students of color. Jones became CEO in August 2019. Jones’s background includes a master’s degree in Communication Science, a law degree and years of leadership roles in many school districts and universities in the state. Her CV did not include the microbiological degree that she tried but was derailed by organic chemistry.
