Although hamburgers are so popular, have you ever wondered why it’s so-called when there’s no ‘ham’ in it? Ham is pork cut from legs that have been preserved by wet or dry methods, with or without smoke. By definition, however, a hamburger is a type of sandwich consisting of one or more pieces of cooked ground meat, usually beef, placed inside a roll of sliced bread or vermicelli.
It was in 1873 when a New York City steak restaurant called “Delmonico’s” opened and displayed the Minimalist Hamburger T-Shirt “Hamburg” steak on its menu for 10 cents. However, there are various claims about the creation of hamburgers. For example, in 1885, at a fair in Hamburg – a town in New York – brothers Frank and Charles Menches did not eat pork and decided to use beef in their sandwich instead. That same year, at the Outagamie County Fair in Seymour, Wisconsin, teenager Charlie Nagreen announced a similar idea.
In 1900, Louis Lassen of Louis’ Lunch in New Haven, Connecticut, Minimalist Hamburger T-Shirt served what could be modern hamburgers. It consists of ground beef between two slices of bread. Nearly a hundred years later, in 2000, the Library of Congress intervened in the debate and said that Louis Lassen of New Haven, Connecticut, had served America’s first hamburger.
