Two people have been arrested for trying to sell a teenage girl to a 32-year-old man for Rs 2 lakh, police said on Tuesday. The man believed to have raped the 16-year-old girl was also arrested, police said.
According to Mankhurd police, the man is a shopkeeper and is known to the minor’s 25-year-old sister. In July, the man told her he was looking for a woman to marry. The shopkeeper, whose previous marriage was unsuccessful, says he will be able to inherit his parents’ estate only if he gets married again, says senior inspector Prakash Choughule of the Mankhurd police station said. “He also told the minor’s sister that he was willing to pay Rs 2 lakh to anyone who could introduce him to such a woman,” the policeman said.

The woman told her husband about the offer and they discussed the prospect of introducing the salesman to the 16-year-old girl, an officer said. However, they did not inform the girl’s mother about it.
On August 2, the couple took the minor to a salesman’s residence in the western suburbs, where he was accused of raping the girl on the grounds of speaking privately with her, the police said.
After they returned home, the girl told her mother about the incident, who approached the Mankhurd police earlier this week and a case with charges of rape, trafficking in minors, in addition to Related of the Protection of Children from the Sexual Offenses Act was registered.
“Three people were arrested under the lawsuit and are currently in police custody,” said an officer.
