Veterinary referral organization Eastcott has teamed up with the Pet Blood Bank (PBB) UK to organize regular dog blood donations at the hospital.
The move comes as the expert-led referral center is one of many veterinary facilities across the Official Dachshund Happy Halloween Shirt country, which regularly receives blood and life plasma from PBB UK.
One case of life-saving treatment was with dachshund dog Heidi. The family pet was in a coma as she struggled with severe anemia. The girl, who received specialist treatment and blood transfusions, is now in a coma and is now able to exercise.
The internal medicine specialist at Eastcott Veterinary Medicine in Swindon, Wiltshire Vanessa Woolhead, said: “Heidi’s condition needs immediate blood transfusions to increase her circulation to an acceptable level.
‘We started immunosuppressive therapy for Heidi for her condition and have been closely monitoring her progress at Eastcott. The lingerie team is delighted with her condition being improved.
“Thankfully, pet blood banks can operate similarly to human blood banks. They collect blood from donated dogs to distribute to dogs like Heidi. The service is a lifespan for dogs who have lost too much blood due to medical conditions, difficult surgeries or serious injuries, such as road traffic accidents.
“They have over 11,000 registered donor dogs, however, supply is always in high demand. We are glad that we can now start helping them with their supplies. ”
Each unit of blood donated by a dog can save the Official Dachshund Happy Halloween Shirt lives of up to four other dogs across Britain.
To be donated blood, dogs must be healthy, from 1 to 8 years old, weighing over 25kg, good nature, have never traveled abroad, are fully vaccinated and do not take drugs.
