When the neighbors found out that 7-year-old Ally Cheek’s health was declining and she might not be able to survive the holiday, they decided to celebrate Christmas early in Vestavia Hills, Alabama. Her neighborhood rallied in early November to light up their home so Ally and her family can celebrate Christmas together again.

Ally has a rare genetic mutation, known as HECW2, that makes special developmental needs worse and worse. Very rarely only about 50 patients are diagnosed in the world. One of those patients was her twin sister, Bailey Grace, who passed away last year. The Pomeranian Christmas begins with Christ 2020 Shirt girls’ mother, Morgan Cheek, said the Christmas lights were literally a source of light during dark times.

“For me, for seven and a half years twins with fragile medical needs, and bury my first child, and then start taking care of my second daughter soon after … I think there are a lot of people reminding that the always light Cheek tells CNN is a great reminder for us as a family.
Cheek said an explosion of décor initially came about after she told a neighbor that Ally was continuing to decline but wanted to see the Christmas lights again.

“I thought we were actually going to hang our Christmas lights this week, so don’t judge us if you see our lights,” she recalls. Just an hour later, the neighbor returned and said that several other families on their detours wanted to hang early lights. Others in their close communities started asking if they could follow, and soon the entire neighborhood was filled with Christmas joy in November – with many homes with Ally’s name on the lights.
