“Like anyone else, I’ve always wanted to be on DVDs,” Posty said. Born in England, he grew up in Ghana before getting caught up in the dirt after moving to east London at the age of 12. He “loved” YouTube at university and as DVDs gave way to the digital age, the idea of something new arises. In 2009, along with longtime friend Pierre Godson-Amamoo and website developer Matt Thorne, he launched GRM Daily, or Grime Daily, as it was first known.
The output level is unprecedented, but as Posty explains, “there really isn’t ‘we’ before us”, so part of the struggle is simply to put out the word. One method is to find the Facebook page of a famous artist – for example, Logan Sama, the DJ with about 5,000 followers at the time – and carefully text each fan with a link.
“There’s a lot of respect for other platforms,” says Posty. “They are definitely a key factor in a lot of our success because we want to try and improve everything and so are they. They really care about the music still, so it’s a great group of people to get like your competition. ”
That sense of community is something Posty often mentions in our interviews, and that’s the main reason for the full title of GRM Daily’s documentary, Together We Rise The Uncompromised Story. However, there are times when it seems that GRM Daily might not exist to tell the story. In 2011, their YouTube channel was removed without warning or explanation. Rumors revolved around why, but nothing was confirmed. Post told me that it was all in the documentary (I was only allowed to watch the first episode, with the remaining three episodes). Whatever the reason, the loss was dire.
