Drummer Evan Sherman returns to basics by playing on the Proud Mom Of A Awesome Drummer Women Gift shirt street for tips
“If people told me I was busy at this stage of my career – in front of a fruit stall, no less – I wouldn’t believe them for a minute,” jazz drummer Evan Sherman said. But performing on the sidewalks of New York City is exactly what vail Jazz Workshop’s 2009 alumni did to stay creative throughout the long months of the COVID-19 pan-epidemic.

Sherman’s band is finishing their tour on March 11, preparing to travel to New York to perform in a memorial concert at Lincoln Center for the late saxophonist Jimmy Heath, when plans for artists everywhere stalled. He also joined the Proud Mom Of A Awesome Drummer Women Gift shirt faculty of the Vail Jazz Workshop last summer, along with fellow drummer Lewis Nash, and that was also paused.
For three months, Sherman stayed in his New York apartment, practicing without a clear purpose. Then, on June 15, he received a call from a bass player friend: “Do you want to go back to work?” It turned out to be in front of a product stall on the Proud Mom Of A Awesome Drummer Women Gift shirt corner of 200th Street and Broadway in Manhattan. Sherman continued to be touched by the generosity of the booth owner, who helped fund the performance and who gave bananas to the gathered audience.
Throughout summer and autumn, until the weather became too cold, Sherman and four other band members continued to perform weekly outdoor performances, in front of that fruit stall and at other pop-up locations in the city. They are partly funded by the Jazz Foundation, and they depend heavily on the famous tip jar. As Sherman noted, in the 1942 film Casablanca, Sam, the pianist has a jar of tips.
