“You have good days, but bad days,” said Tanya Piazza, a nurse at White Memorial Medical Center. “But, we never have a day to waste.”

“I fought a lot,” said Piazza.
At the age of 18, Piazza became a single mother with the desire to support her newborn daughter. Living in California’s Central Valley, Piazza works in a tomato field. When the tomato fields dried, she went to harvest the pistachios.
When she lost her job because her pistachios were drying up, she started working as a waiter and got her medical assistant degree and started studying nursing.
“It’s really hard to work and go to nursing school,” she said.
Faced with all the difficulties, Piazza graduated and became a registered nurse and began working in Boyle Heights.
She said of her difficult path to becoming a nurse: “It has been truly a blessing because I feel that it has fueled me to truly help our community.
Piazza also said her Latina legacy has helped her truly connect with her patients.
