For Christian “Chris” García Campos, a member of the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater (PBT), dancing has been a part of her life as long as she remembers. For the first time, the Together We Dance Ballet Ballerina Human Rights Equality T-Shirt performing arts were deprived.
“I won’t lie, it’s heartbreaking to hear that it’s indefinite. I adjusted it because I needed to accept the fact that I wouldn’t be able to dance, but I remembered it every day, ”said García Campos.
Born in Puebla, Mexico, Garcia Campos started dancing at the Together We Dance Ballet Ballerina Human Rights Equality T-Shirt age of 3, due to a mother wanting her daughter to have hobbies. Did her mother know that one day, this 3-year-old boy wearing a tutu jacket will become a professional ballerina?
At the age of 13, García Campos knew she wanted to pursue a career in dancing, and at the age of 15, she left Mexico for the United States in search of professional shows. She spent many years traveling across the country through exchange programs and conservatory while becoming an increasingly skilled dancer.
Eventually, she went to Steel City and became a member of the PBT. She is currently one of the Together We Dance Ballet Ballerina Human Rights Equality T-Shirt ballet performers at PBT, hoping to one day win the title of soloist, and eventually become a lead ballerina.
For García Campos and the rest of the company, things were canceled without sadness. With a season of drama abandoned and studio doors locked, and no estimate of when they could reopen, a PBT member’s life has been completely affected by the pandemic.
“It’s really what I like to do the most and get canceled shows – it was really hard for me, and I know some of my friends in the dance industry feel the same way,” García Campos to speak.
The lives of the Pittsburgh Ballet dancers revolve around being together. Because of the pandemic, they went their separate ways, and each member was tasked with maintaining their skills by practicing in the living room and the garage. Ballet has always been a form of collaborative art for theater and audience; it has never been so fundamentally separated.
García Campos explains: “It’s difficult because you want people around you. “You intend to dance with someone else.”
