We analyze undead companies, which are defined as unprofitable companies with low stock market valuations. Documenting the rise of zombie companies over the past three decades, we explore their anatomy and life cycle. Their anatomy was analyzed for their economic, financial and performance characteristics, compared to non-zombie companies. To determine the lifecycle of a zombie company, we study how key items in its balance sheet and profit accounts move in the years before and after the Zombies hate fast food shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater company becomes the first zombie. We further record what happened to zombie companies over time, enlarging those companies that have sought to recover from a zombie state.
We see an increase in the share of zombie companies from 4% in the late 1980s to 15% in 2017. These zombie companies are smaller, less productive, use more leverage and top invest less in physical and intangible capital. Their performance deteriorated for several years before being zombified and still poor for the following years. 25% of zombie companies have left the market (dead), while 60% officially recovered from a zombie state. The recovered zombies, however, perform worse than companies that were never zombies, and they face a high probability of recurrence in a zombie state.
Using firm-grade data on non-financial companies listed in 14 advanced economies, we recorded an increase in the Zombies hate fast food shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater market share of undead companies, identified as non-born companies. profit with low stock market valuations, from 4% in the late 1980s to 15% in 2017. These zombie companies are smaller, less productive, more leveraged, and invest less in capital material and invisible. Their performance deteriorated for several years before being synthesized by zombar and still significantly worse than companies without zombies in the years that followed.
