Boo at the Creek also relied on community support and this year many businesses were unable to sponsor the event, Cairns said.

“Looking at all of those factors, we feel like we can’t come up with a way to deliver the event that complies with those protocols and ensures security,” she said.

Usually, event planning begins in August. With the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic, Cairns said organizers want to make a decision about the event’s future soon, as planning for it is a key time commitment. When deciding to cancel when they did, she said they were lucky not to have to cancel the series of plans that had happened.
However, the cancellation was a disappointment, she added.
Boo at the Creek was established in 2015 as a safe daytime Halloween event for families. During its first year, Cairns said about 500 people attended the event. In the years since, the event has grown in popularity, attracting thousands of people.
