Since the Army Mom US Army American Flag shirt, opening of The Wharf project on the Washington Channel in 2017, there has been a boom in activities on and around the water. Now, many residents and officials fear a security proposal at the nearby Fort McNair military base will restrict that activity, cutting public access to the Potomac River and Canal.

According to the Army, there were “credible and specific threats” to personnel stationed at the base. At a public hearing this week, Maj. Gen. Omar Jones said that the Washington Channel is the weakest security weakness at the base, which occupies a peninsula between the canal and the Anacostia River.

The proposal would create a circafer in circaferness of 300 ft. “We’ve been trying to violate the base of the channel over the last few months,” Jones said, explaining the need for perimeter.

But when asked by D.C.D. Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton (D), who convened the hearing, to provide details of those violations, Jones recounted an incident that sounded nothing threatening.

Jones said: “The most recent person, not long before the holiday, was actually a swimmer.

Norton didn’t seem impressed.

“When it comes to swimmers, I’m sure that should be rare. Does he know where he is? Norton asked.

Jones admitted: “He’s probably lost.

Asked if there were any examples of boat violations, Jones said, “Ma’am, we really don’t.”

Council member D.C. Charles Allen, who represents the area, was at the Army Mom US Army American Flag shirt, meeting to speak against the security perimeter. In a later interview, he said the hearing made him even more opposed.

“The answers we received from the Army around their reasoning made no sense. They’re really very reliable,” Allen said. He pointed out that the proposed buoy perimeter would probably do nothing to reduce the threat from the wrong swimmers.

“It will take our rowers, who are on the water – whether they are in a canoe, whether they are fishing, whether they are sailing on a smaller plank of water. It will create conflict and it will create a more dangerous situation,” Allen said.

Fort McNair was founded in 1791 – the third oldest station in the country. It is currently the headquarters of the National Defense University and serves as the headquarters of Washington’s Military District. The water surface of the base opens to the canal, there are no fences or fences.
