The new work, published today in JNCI, Journal of the Breast Cancer Awareness Funny All Boobs Matter shirt National Cancer Institute, reports that the increased number of “exhausted”, non-functional T cells seems to make tumors in patients of African descent more aggressive and difficult to treat. – a discovery that also opens the door to therapeutic interventions that can help eliminate significant disparities in survival between black and white patients with breast cancer.
In the United States, breast cancer mortality rates in Black women are 40% higher than in white women. Seeking new information about what is driving those unequal outcomes, the Roswell Park team used both pathological profiles and gene expression to describe the characteristics of immune cells entering the breast tumor microenvironment of 1,315 patients in the Women’s Health Study.
The data collected by the Breast Cancer Awareness Funny All Boobs Matter shirt team showed marked differences in tumor immune responses between black and white patients. While tumors in Black patients show a stronger overall immune cell presence, immune cells in Black patients appear to have lower anti-tumor activity.
“We have observed in the tumor microenvironment of breast cancer in patients of African descent there are distinct signs of depleted T cells compared to cd8+ cell totals and note that this immune cell profile is associated with poorer breast cancer survival, especially in sub-categories that are positive for hormone receptors of breast cancer,” said Dr. Yao, Professor of Oncology at the Department of Cancer Prevention and Control at Roswell Park and the Breast Cancer Awareness Funny All Boobs Matter shirt first author of the new publication.
