Photographer Akiko DuPont has documented the 94-year-old man’s journey with Alzheimer’s and how a shy and shy cat named Kinako changed his life.
DuPont writes that in 2009, her grandfather whom she called “Jiji” was taken to the hospital. Doctors diagnosed him with Alzheimer’s disease.
She said that the grandfather she knew seemed to be leaving. “The man who experienced gradually lost interest in life and became more grumpy than ever.”

Not long after her diagnosis, DuPont brought home Kinako, a 4-month-old kitten she had saved.
At first she was hesitant to share the news with her grandfather.
DuPont explains that while her Jiji is an animal person, he is somewhat more dog-loving and not an avid fan of cats, mainly because the people in the neighborhood often use the garden. is like a trash can.
But the moment Jiji looked at Kinako, his niece said she saw his face light up and she instantly knew that a special relationship was forming.
Kinako has become a constant companion.
The cat watches Jiji when he performs a favorite ritual of reading the newspaper and cutting out the articles he likes.
But like with any close couple, controversy arose. As Kinako jumped on the table as Jiji started cutting her articles, the two started quarreling back and forth, even though they had finally resolved the issue.
Kinako was there when it was time to nap, lying next to her friend, even in the same sleeping position.
