It depicts motifs taken on McCoy’s camera that he has frequently used since his final year of high school to document every aspect of his life. Some of the motifs include a hand-painted old woman describing the 9/11 event, a man playing guitar in a train station, a transgender woman detailing her struggles and numerous parties hosted by high school friends. Through these motifs, the audience looks directly at McCoy’s perspective, understanding his desires and needs through the camera. Repeat figures appear professionally showing how McCoy became a heroin addict and who led him there. However, the Home State Cryptids Home Of The Fresno Nightcrawlers shirt motifs themselves are scattered, never consistent with a story or idea, merely documenting the many odd types of folk in Boston. When reflecting a city or a life experience, it works well, but never has enough time for each topic to use to learn them on a deeper level. The title of the film is ‘night hunters’, but in the end, it is really about McCoy.
Nightcrawlers are fascinating because this is not a documentary in the traditional format, just a loose collection of connected home video recordings. It’s a true collection of “found” footage that reminds me of the linear version of Zia Anger’s multimedia performance of My First Film but is also reminiscent of the short film Good Kid M.A.d. and the film Cameraperson.
