Garen is not alone in his quest. Quinn and Valor, and Cithira take a central position in Garen: First Shield. The stance will shift to Quinn or Cithira periodically throughout the I’m A Garen Hoe Shovel Vintage limited Shirt novel though never long enough to make either of the characters feel full.

In Garen: First Shield, Demacia is on the brink of destruction. The king of Demacian is dead, and its prince, Jarvan VI, is preoccupied with vengeance. Not to mention the former captive mages who escaped after murdering the king. The center of everything is Garen, who blames himself for letting it all happen. Written by Anthony Reynolds, Garen: First Shield follows the I’m A Garen Hoe Shovel Vintage limited Shirt leader of Dauntless Vanguard as he tries to face the biggest failure of his career.
Taking place weeks if not days after the League of Legends mini-series and Marvel Comic, Lux and the Rules of Survival short story, Garen: First Shield is the first Riot Games novel. Continuing the story the studio is developing around the larger League of Legends story, Garen: First Shield is the start of a much larger adventure. The weight of realism is what makes character interactions and dynamics much more believable. Reynolds has done a wonderful job making Dauntless Vanguards truly feel like a unit that closely trusts each other throughout their lives. Even the forever indestructible Eben Hess, a soldier under Garen’s command, felt like he belonged to the unit.
After Garen was sent on a peacetime expedition across the border of Demacia, Garen and his elite warrior unit, Dauntless Vanguard, stumbled across a major threat to the I’m A Garen Hoe Shovel Vintage limited Shirt nation. Thankfully, Riot Games has provided a map for the reader to help navigate Demacia. Reynolds has done a spectacular job bringing one of League of Legends oldest champions a reality. Being able to follow Garen’s thoughts and self-doubts gives the reader a chance to see another side of him. Through comic books and games, Garen is shown as a strong, confident soldier who makes tough decisions based on years of combat experience. In Garen: First Shield, we see a soldier who cares about his abilities and at times even gets scared.
League of Legends universe fans will welcome the fresh, authentic story Reynolds presents in Garen: First Shield. By the end of it though, readers will wonder if there’s room for more. The last two chapters encapsulate everything quite neatly and are a bit unfortunate that that happens. The heroes do little to escape their situation but still find a way to survive with some outside help.
The novel ends with Garen going back to where he started, asking similar questions in less context about where the larger story follows. Riot Games and Reynolds are clearly building something big for League of Legends, but it would be nice to have a little more context for what’s next.
