“I recommend going to Hawaii for two weeks and visiting two islands,” said Karen Frangipane, senior manager of Luxe Travel Hawaii based in Honolulu. “If you only have one week, then I recommend choosing an island that best suits your personality.”
Herron of Island Journeys said she helps tourists visit two islands in a week if “they are determined”. Even though it’s easy to get around the islands, she says, it’s still “pretty much all day”.
Commercial flights can be as short as 30 minutes, while passenger ferries connect Maui to Lanai (45 minutes) and Molokai (90 minutes). However, travelers have to take into account transit and waiting times as well as hotel check-in times that can be as late as 4pm, Herron said.
“For first-time visitors to Hawaii… I would recommend two to three nights in Waikiki and four or five nights on a neighboring island,” Herron said.
