While the starting left hand is about to become a senior looking to earn some more offers from Division-I universities, football has become more of a game for him.
“Football saved my life in a way, so I owe it everything,” he said. “In my second year, I went through a really tough time that I almost gave up on life. Then coach (Jordan) Ingman came into my life and gave me football.
“Since then, football has been everything to me. That’s my way out. ”
Born to a Nicaraguan mother and Cuban father, Marquez saw first-hand how hard work and determination can be rewarded.
His mother moved to America alone at the age of 20, unable to speak English. But she’s set an example by working steadily to support her family ever since Marquez said.

Marquez grew up loving basketball, but when he entered high school, he decided to try football, as a simple way to pass time. After a year playing defensively on Pirates Junior varsity, he realized that he wasn’t really enjoying the game.
