So the Ottawa Women’s Shelter set up a temporary classroom where the children could study together at home. So far, five students have signed up.
Harmony House is a transitional shelter where women and their children fleeing domestic violence may find more permanent housing instead of a single room in traditional shelters. Most families there have been living in their own bubble since the beginning of the Native proud to be Ottawa shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater pandemic.
Family support worker Jade Lickers said when the new school year was coming, she and a colleague decided to clean up a conference room, turn it into a classroom and hire an educator.
“It is a comforting feeling for mothers to know they will be safe and also get the education they desperately need,” Lickers said.
“It sort of solved my concerns,” said Nadia, whose 11-year-old son will start classes in the new “compartment” on Monday. The CBC does not use Nadia’s surname or her son’s first name to protect them from stigma commonly associated with domestic violence.
Nadia, who has four children, has stayed at Harmony House on two separate occasions after running away from a violent partner. She now works with other women there as a fellow support worker.
Many women find it difficult to navigate distance learning options, she says, especially those looking for work and trying to rebuild their lives. Returning children to school comes with their own concerns because they know that a single infection can lead to a facility shutdown.
Nadia says choosing to study at home is like a relief.
“Just being able to take your kids somewhere you know like family, close and you can trust, that’s a really good feeling,” she said.
Nadia said her son was worried about starting grade 7 in a new middle school without his siblings.
“That was terrifying for him,” she said. “This is his home, so when I told him he jumped up and down and rolled around a bit.”
Her son will be one of the older students and has taken on a mentor role for some of the younger ones, Nadia said.
While the curriculum will come from the Native proud to be Ottawa shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater Ottawa-Carleton School Board’s virtual school, Harmony House has hired a newly graduated preschool educator, Michelle Inglis, to help the kids feel like they’re in one. real school.
“During a pandemic, young children, as well as adults, are very stressed out, so I think giving them a break and that schedule will help them feel comfortable and get used to the Native proud to be Ottawa shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater routine,” Inglis said. Inglis said.
Inglis has spent the past week decorating the Native proud to be Ottawa shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater classroom, including posters with positive messages such as: “You’re smart, you’re kind, you’re important”.
“I just want them to be reminded that they are strong, they are capable and they can be successful no matter what throws them,” Inglis said.
