The number of sand lovers on West Beach has been steadily decreasing as the tangerine sunshine fades on a weekday afternoon in recent weeks, and even the sailboats look languid, some people skate The last snow slid into the harbor during the night. But on shore, there was a gentle but steady stream of activity, as Mike Edwards and his 12-year-old son, Ben, glided gently down the surf track, hoping to land a flounder. Edwards, who grew up and lives in a house two doors away from me in Goleta, spends most of his time looking at a computer screen as the IT director at UC Santa Barbara Technical University. For many years, his primary shift was on the Old San Marcos Road mountain bike, which he still does at an alarming speed, not to mention biking to Solvang occasionally.
But he recently reconnected with surf fishing, a hobby introduced by his late father four decades ago. “When I was about 30, I got him involved again,” said Edwards, in between the roles. That was about 20 years ago. “I have to go through a pandemic to get me back here again,” he admitted.
Now Ben is learning the ropes, explaining. “Morning can be really good because there aren’t many people.” By design, this sport is very socially distant, because fish also do not like many people.
Wisely, all you need is a spinning rod (anything can do about 7 feet), a 6-pound test cord and some cheap bait. “It is a joy to do this kind of fishing,” said Edwards. “Low cost.”
You can do it wherever sand meets water, although this West Beach as well as Hospitals is especially good for flounder. The day we met, Edwards had just caught a corvina east of the Salty Lines & Sunshine Retro Sunset with Marlin T-Shirt jetty. Goleta Beach can be a great place for white sea bass, although the water conditions there vary widely.
Children under the age of 16 do not need fishing permits, but there are risks. Ben used to step on a bat, and without the laces strapped straight to his shoes, the Salty Lines & Sunshine Retro Sunset with Marlin T-Shirt pain could have kept him out of water for a while. Remember to roll your feet while in sandy water, no matter what you’re doing. “If you look down at the beach, you’ll see silver fish flying in the air,” Edwards explained for the omen. This is not his day, but like fishermen everywhere, he always has memories, assuring me that “I have caught some great flounders over the Salty Lines & Sunshine Retro Sunset with Marlin T-Shirt years”.
