Peggy Schuyler is best known as a supporting character in Hamilton, but the hit musical left a lot of important information about her. Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton has long been a cultural phenomenon, but its recent release on Disney + piqued its popularity. The film captures the life of founding father Alexander Hamilton, exploring both his political goals and personal connections. Much of the show’s music was influenced by hip hop, pop, and R&B, a rarity for a Broadway show and one of the major contributions to the show’s popularity.

Primarily inspired by Ron Chernow Alexander Hamilton’s biography, the show covers quite a bit of historical grounds, so it is not surprising that some details are left out. Often times, when historical inaccuracies appear in Hamilton’s story, it’s the benefit of rationalizing the plot or creating tension in the story. However, Hamilton has been criticized for honoring the Patriarchs and other historical figures, causing much debate and discussion among historians and fans alike. Even so, the show brought some of the necessary diversity to the Broadway show, starring a mostly non-white cast, and in an article published by The Atlantic, Miranda describes the show as “a story about America then, told by America now. ”
The musical underlines the fact that Peggy is the youngest of the three Schuyler sisters depicted, and mentions her good relationship with Hamilton, but ignores any other discussions about life. her. Despite her small role in the musical, Peggy Schuyler is fan favorite, if for nothing other than her delightful meme line, “And Peggy!” in the song “The Schuyler Sisters.” Played by the incredibly talented Jasmine Cephas Jones, Peggy only appeared in Hamilton’s first act when Cephas Jones went on to play Maria Reynolds, Alexander Hamilton’s mistress in Act Two. While the portrait of Peggy Schuyler drawn by Hamilton is not inaccurate, it lacks detail. This is what the musical is about the real Peggy Schuyler.
Margarita Schuyler was born to Philip and Catherine’s parents in 1758, Schuyler’s third daughter always known as Peggy. Although Hamilton described Philip Schuyler as having no sons (and having only three daughters), in reality there were eight of Schuyler’s children who survived adulthood. Angelica was the eldest, followed by Eliza, Peggy, John Bradstreet, Philip Jeremiah, Rensselaer, Cornelia, and finally the youngest Catherine. The Schuyler family lived in a mansion in Albany and was really rich, as the musical pointed out. The three eldest sisters of Schuyler are highly regarded by many for their friendly and attractive personality. Although she has seven siblings, Peggy is eight years older than her brother John and 18 years older than her sister Cornelia, so it is not entirely inaccurate to envision the three Schuylers as a coherent unit.
