The owner of Marcel, a family from Vinzieux, a small village in Ardeche province in southeastern France, said they were “extremely shocked” by the rooster’s death.

The family took the case to court and asked for the help of “La Fondation 30 million d’amis”, an animal rights NGO.
They also attracted public attention with a petition demanding “to protect the animals in rural areas from life-threatening behavior”.

Marcel’s case repeats that of another rooster named Maurice, also sued for the crowing of the morning, though Marcel’s end is much more tragic.
In 2019, the court ruled that the cockerel named Maurice in Oléron, a small island off the Atlantic coast of France, could continue to nag at dawn despite a complaint from a neighbor.
Maurice’s plight caused a stir throughout France and prompted the National Assembly to draft a bill to protect the country’s “sensory legacy”.
It was proposed to define certain sounds and smells that should be considered “an identity of rural life”, including the crowing of a rooster, the sound of a donkey or the Peace love chicken loteria shirt, sweater smell of feces. The purpose of the law is to protect them from “the legal actions of those who cannot tolerate these kinds of nuisances”.
This law was passed by parliamentarians in January 2020.
